Sheikh Ammar AlShukry
An American-Sudanese Islamic scholar, speaker, poet, and community leade
Sheikh Ammar AlShukry is a Sudanese-American scholar and inspiring voice in contemporary Islamic education and poetry. Originally from Sudan, he grew up in Queens, New York, where he began his pursuit of knowledge in Quran, Hadith, Aqidah (creed), Fiqh (jurisprudence), and Tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), studying under various teachers in the U.S. He holds dual Bachelor’s degrees in Islamic Studies and Marketing through the AlMaghrib Institute.
Professionally, Sheikh Ammar serves as a Director at the AlMaghrib Institute and as an Imam at the Clear Lake Islamic Center. He is well known for engaging students of different generations, blending scholarship, creativity, and emotional resonance in his work. His teaching includes live lectures and online courses—such as his popular “A Mindful Salah”—which seek both to nurture spirituality and increase mindfulness in worship.
Outside purely academic work, Sheikh Ammar is a gifted poet. His collection What the Pen Wrote: The Collected Poems of Ammar AlShukry reflects his reflective, heart-led style, and he often uses poetry as a medium to deepen faith and move people emotionally. He is recognised for being able to “walk seamlessly between generations,” making his lectures, reminders, and creative works accessible and impactful across diverse Muslim communities.
